Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopster Of The Week!...The Very First Black Man To Play...In 1902!..Harry "Bucky" Lew!

 

The 'Hoopster Of The Week'

for this week 

goes to: 

the Big Black Guy, 5-8, 160, who was the 

very first Black Man to play Professional 

Basketball from 1902 (age 18) to 1905 

starting with the Pawtucketville Athletic 

Club of the New England Basketball 

League, with some success, but  the 

league folded in 1905, then he formed 

his own team for a while, then after that, he 

coached at Lowell Textiles starting in 

1922, making him the first Black Man 

to coach an integrated college basketball 

team in the U.S., but he has yet to get 

into the Hall of Fame, which needs to be done,

and he did so much more...

Black Baseball History Month was

in 2025 to commemorate, place value, 

and get to know, our Heroes, while 

standing and cheering for, the many 

International Black Men who 'Shocked 

and Awed' us with too many to count, 

fantastic and unexpected physical 

heroics at the Ballpark, in exciting 

efforts for their teams to cross home 

plate more than their opponents to win.

Black Basketball History Month!...Hoopster Of The Week!...Larry Doby!


Our 'Hoopster of the Week'

for this week 

goes to: 

the Big Black Guy, 6-1, 180, who paused 

playing baseball with the Cleveland Indians in 1947, 

to participate in one winter season during 

1947-48 to play for the Paterson Crescents 

of the American Basketball League, not NBA, in eight 

games, averaging 2 points per game, 

making him the first Black Man to play 

Pro Basketball, then he resumed playing 

baseball where he was already the first 

Black Man contracted to play in the MLB 

American League, 

plus he did so much more...

Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopster Of The Week!... William Garrett!



The 'Hoopster Of The Week'

for this week 

goes to:

the Big Black Guy, 6-3, 215. who was the 

first Black player to regularly play on a Big 

Ten College Conference Varsity basketball 

team, and was called 'Indiana Mr. 

Basketball' in 1947 after leading his school 

to win the State Championships, and he also 

won the same state title as a coach at Crisps 

Attucks High, and was also known as an 

educator and a College Administrator, plus

he has a really huge and sparkling 

Basketball Stadium named after 

him in Shelbyville, Indiana,

and so much more...

(6-7, 185) to play in the NBA, 

and who won a NBA 

Championship title and ring

in 1955 with teammate Earl Lloyd, and 

was the fastest to score a triple double 

in 17 minutes,

Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopster Of The Week!...A'ja Wilson!



The 'Hoopster Of The Week'

for this week 

goes to:

the Big Black Lady 6-4, 195, who led her 

college team, the So. 

Carolina Gamecocks to their first NCAA 

Championship in 2017, and was the 

Naismith College Player of the Year 

in 2018, along with winning 

three straight SEC Player of the Year 

Awards, and helping So. Carolina win 

four straight SEC Tournament 

Championships and who was the first 

overall draft pick by Las Vegas in 2018, 

helping them win the championships in 

2022 and 2023, while also winning three 

league MVPs and a Finals MVP (2023), 

and she is the first WNBA player to 

register a 30-20 double double, and who 

also won two Olympic Gold Medals and 

two World Cup Medals with the U S Team,

and so much more...

Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopster Of The Week!...Earl Lloyd!



The 'Hoopster Of The Week'

for this week 

goes to: 

the first Big Black Man (6-5, 200 lbs) 

to Play in an NBA game October 31, 

1950, with the Washington Capitols, 

and was drafted in 

1950, while also winning an NBA 

Championship ring in 1955, 

with the Syracuse Nationals,

and was one 

of the first Black head 

coaches in the league with the 

Detroit Pistons, and helped his college 

team in 1948, West Virginia State, to go 

undefeated, plus he was known as

'The Big Cat,'

and so much more...
