Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopsters Of The Week!... The Four Most Prominent Beautiful Black Women Who Played In The Inaugural Season Of The WNBA In 1997!


The 'Hoopsters Of The Week'

for this week 

are: 

the four Big, Black, and Beautiful Ladies who 

'turned it out' in the first season of the WNBA, 

which happened in 1997:






Lisa Leslie, 445 pts, 28 games, 15.9 ave., 

with 266 rebounds was season leader,  earns 

the first double-double in league history, 

was fouled 99 times, 2nd in blocked shots with 59




Cynthia Cooper, 621 pts in 28 games, 22.2 ave., 

season scoring leader, league's first season MVP, 

made the most 3-point shots, highest-paid player 

for 1997, played with teammates with Sheryl 

Swoopes and Tina Thompson on 1997 WNBA Champ team




Sheryl Swoopes, 64 pts, in 9 games, 7.1 ave., 

birthed her son and missed 19 games, 

WNBA Champ in 1997 with teammates 

Tina Thompson and Cynthia Cooper




Tina Thompson, 370 pts in 28 games, 13.2 ave., 

first ever draft pick in WNBA history, won four 

straight Championships, was fouled 107 times 

(3rd) in 1997, teammates with Cheryl Swoopes 

and Cynthia Cooper on 1997 Champ squad



Teresa Witherspoon had 173 assists, ave. 6.2, 

first WNBA player to reach 1,000 assists, 

first player to scored double digits for assists, 

in her first Pro game no less, steals season leader, 

Season Def. Player of the Year in 1997,  helped 

team get to WNBA Finals where her team, 

NY Liberty lost to Sheryl Swoopes, 

Tina Thompson and Cynthia Cooper-led 

Houston Comets (1997)

individual and team 

efforts to put the ball through the 

hoop the most, to win games and 

championships!
