Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopster Of The Week!...Hank DeZonie!

The 'Hoopster Of The Week'

for this week 

goes to: 

the Big Black Man, a 6-6, 215, center/forward 

and Clark Atlanta U. graduate who became 

the fourth Big Black Player to integrate the 

exclusionary NBA during the 1950-51 season 

with the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, however he 

grew disenchanted with the racial hostilities and 

the ineptitude of the coaches and decided to 

retire from the sport, becoming an entrepreneur 

and owning the Renny Lounge with his wife 

for a long time in Harlem, 

and so much more...

Black Basketball History Month, 

celebrated in October each year,  was

founded by Ralph C. Winge, D.D.S.

in 2025 to acknowledge, praise,

and hold high, with cheer, the untold 

numbers of International Black Men 

and Women, both past and present, 

that made us go, "Wow!...Whoa!...

...and...OMGosh!" in their nonstop, 

valiant, and always surprising, 

individual and team 

efforts to put the ball through the 

hoop the most, to win games and 

championships!



The Founder of Black Basketball History Month,

Ralph C.Winge, D.D.S.,

is also a Basketball enthusiast,

and USC Dental School Graduate.

Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopster Of The Week!...Harry "Bucky" Lew!

  

The 'Hoopster Of The Week'

for this week 

goes to: 

the Big Black Man, 5-7, 150, at the age of 18, 

is known as the first Big Black Professional 

Basketball Player in the U. S., debuting in 

1902 for the Lowell team in the New England 

Basketball League, and in 1898, at 14, he 

joined the local YMCA team and were State 

Champs four years straight, and remember 

that the rules were different back then, there 

was no backboard and no out of bounds, so 

the ball was always in play and it was a 

continuous rough and tumble situation, 

along with the racist taunts and elbows and 

kicks that he endured, but some of his most 

vocal and physical opponents became some 

of his best friends with him later in life, 

plus his grandma's house in Massachusetts 

was a stop on the Underground Railroad, 

and so much more...

Black Basketball History Month!... Hoopster Of The Week!...World B. Free!


The 'Hoopster Of The Week'

for this week 

goes to: 

the Big Black Man, 6-3, 185 pound 

shooting/point guard who was known for his 

flamboyant play, that extremely high arcing 

'rainbow' jump shot which barely moved 

the net when going through, his 44-inch 

vertical leap and 360 degree dunks, his 

nicknames 'The Prince of Mid-Air', 'Brownsville 

Bomber' and 'All-World,' plus in college, his 

team won the NAIA National Championship 

and he was named MVP of the NAIA 

Tournament in 1973, and he was an All-Star 

Gamer in 1980, after which he played in the 

USBL in 1987 where his team won the 

championships and he was playoff MVP, and 

after retiring, among many other things, he 

is the director of player development and is 

a community ambassador for the Philadelphia 76ers, 

with some highlights here,

and so much more...
